What makes our situation unusual is the scale (and variety) of data collected. For data analysts, who are highly-trained statisticians but not necessarily experienced programmers, the scale of the data can present a significant barrier.
The Hancock project started three years ago with the hypothesis that the key to reducing the complexity of computing with massive data sets was to identify a set of essential abstractions and incorporate them into a language.
